Policy Push: Africa Events Summit Calls for Convention Bureau, Stronger Industry Collaboration to Unlock Kenya’s Events Economy

NAIROBI, Kenya|September 5, 2026 — The Africa Events Summit (AES) has called for the implementation of Kenya’s long-awaited convention bureau and stronger collaboration among players in the events industry to unlock the sector’s economic potential.
The call was made on Saturday afternoon during a press conference at the iconic Argyle Grand Hotel in along Mombasa road, ahead of the inaugural Africa Events Summit scheduled for September 10 and 11, 2026.
The high level summit will bring together event planners, producers, venues, suppliers, brands, tourism stakeholders and global manufacturers from across East Africa under the theme, “Building Africa's Event Economy: Decisions. Direction. Alignment.”
AES Targets Industry Collaboration
Speaking during the press briefing,AES Convener and Billion Events Chief Executive Officer Ian Migwi, said the summit seeks to provide a platform where industry players can network, exchange knowledge and explore opportunities for collaboration.
“The main objective of the event is to act as a catalyst for industry collaboration, networking and knowledge exchange; the event is one of a kind, bringing together event stakeholders across the region for the first time in history," Migwi said.
The organisers said the regional events industry has for a long time been characterised by silos and limited trust, factors they believe have hindered strategic partnerships and the growth of the sector.
The AES is a private-sector initiative building on existing industry conversations, including the Africa MICE Summit & Expo.
Recommendations emerging from the summit are expected to be submitted to the Principal Secretary for Tourism to inform policy decision-making and help shape the future direction of the events industry.
Push For Convention Bureau
The implementation of a convention bureau also emerged as a key issue during the Saturday's press conference, with stakeholders noting that Kenya's ability to attract and coordinate major international events could be strengthened through such an institution.
On his part, MICE analyst Simon P. cautioned that the convention bureau has yet to take off, citing competing budgetary priorities.
“Lest we forget, the convention bureau is still yet to take off due to budgetary constraints competing with education and healthcare budgets in parliament," Simon said.
The AES Secretariat, however, acknowledged several positive developments by the government aimed at making Kenya more attractive to international visitors and events.
These include the waiver of visa requirements for citizens of 52 African countries, the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and the construction of the Bomas International Convention Complex.
Event Security Under Spotlight
Security at events will also feature prominently during the two-day summit, with industry stakeholders warning that safety concerns could undermine Kenya's competitiveness as an events destination.
Speaking during the press conference, Litali Kingsley, CEO of CRIMESHIELD SECURITY LTD, said event organisers should treat security as a critical component of event planning rather than an afterthought.
He said the safety of attendees and their belongings is central to creating positive experiences at events.
“During the summit we shall be hosting a masterclass for event security; with real case studies, we welcome you all for the Africa Events Summit," Kingsley said.
He also raised concerns over rising insecurity at some commonly used event venues, calling for stakeholders to address existing gaps if Kenya is to attract more events.
“We believe that no one should lose their personal belongings in pursuit of great experiences."
Call For Greater Support For Local Artists
The creative industry will also feature prominently during the summit, with Alikiba's Talent Manager Benjamin Otwal scheduled to host a masterclass focusing on experience and creative alignment.
Otwal called for increased corporate investment in local artists, particularly in campaigns and events, saying stronger partnerships could help promote and grow the creative industry.
The masterclass is expected to explore how brands, event organisers and creatives can work together to create experiences that deliver value while supporting local talent.
June Chepkemei To Headline Summit
Kenya Tourism Board CEO June Chepkemei is expected to headline the summit with key opening remarks alongside other notable speakers.
The opening panel, “Building Africa's Event Economy: Current State, Opportunities & Gaps,” will take place on Day One from 11:30am to 1:30pm.
The session will be moderated by corporate MC Ian Muiruri and will bring together key industry voices, including Zaheeda Suleman, CEO of The Be Experience Company; Harold Mnkheni, MD of Haddypro Co. Ltd, Tanzania; Eric Mwanzia, MD of The Arts Group Ltd and Chairman of EMAK; Grace Ndiege, Influence and Advocacy Manager at EABL; and Khalhani Sichangi, Founder and Group CEO of KS Group Africa.
