Speaking during a press briefing on Monday afternoon at Second Avenue, Garden Estate, Nairobi, the group said it was concerned by reports attributing insulting remarks to Mwago while referring to the President.
“We have followed with deep concern the reports attributed to the Member of Parliament for Starche, Hon. Amos Mwago, in which he referred to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya H.E. William Ruto as (TAKA TAKA) during a political engagement in Nakuru Last week. Regardless of political disagreements that may exist between any Leader and the Executive, there exists a basic standard of decorum expected of every elected leader when addressing the Head of State,” the group stated.
The movement acknowledged that elected leaders have a constitutional and political right to criticise government policies and hold the administration accountable. However, it said such criticism should not cross into personal attacks against the Head of State or undermine the dignity of national institutions.
“We wish to state plainly: political criticism is legitimate and protected; personal insults directed at the institution of the Presidency are not. There is a difference between challenging policy and demeaning the office that every Kenyan, regardless of political persuasion, is called upon to respect,” the group added.
Vijana na Ruto Wants Parliament to Act
The group has called on National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah to initiate proceedings to establish whether the remarks attributed to Mwago were actually made.
“We therefore call upon the Speaker of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, and the Majority Leader, Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, to take this matter up formally within the House,” the group maintained.
Vijana na Ruto wants the Starehe MP to be given an opportunity to clarify the matter on the floor of the House and confirm or deny the statements attributed to him.
If the remarks are verified, the movement wants Mwago to issue an unreserved public apology to President Ruto and the Kenyan public.
The group also wants the Speaker’s office to consider the matter as a possible breach of parliamentary decorum, arguing that elected leaders should uphold the dignity of the institution.
Group Draws Line Between Criticism and Insults
Vijana na Ruto said political differences should not be used to justify personal attacks against national leaders.
The movement argued that allowing such remarks to go unaddressed could set a dangerous precedent and weaken public respect for national institutions.
It maintained that accountability should apply to all elected leaders, regardless of their political affiliation.
Youth Urged to Back Ruto’s Development Agenda
The controversy over Mwago’s alleged remarks was also used by the youth movement to call on young Kenyans to remain organised and support President Ruto’s economic development agenda.
Vijana na Ruto urged the youth to scrutinise the performance of elected leaders while rejecting what it described as political opportunism.
The movement also cautioned against leaders who abandon previous political alliances for political convenience, calling for consistency and political discipline as Kenya moves closer to the 2027 General Election.
The group reiterated that respect for national institutions, accountability and loyalty within political ranks would remain key principles in its political activities.
