KISUMU, KENYA, April 3, 2026 — Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Henry Oyuu has secured a second term after being elected unopposed during the union’s national elections held at Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu.

Oyuu’s re-election highlights strong backing from union members and underscores a largely uncontested electoral process that saw most top leadership positions filled without competition.

His deputy, Hesbon Otieno, also retained his position unopposed. Other officials elected without opposition include National Chairman Patrick Karinga, First Vice National Chairman Malel Langat, Second Vice National Chairman Aggrey Namisi, National Treasurer James Ndiku, Deputy National Treasurer Kennedy Nyamwanda, and Assistant National Treasurer Kullow Mohammed.

The two National Women Representatives, Mercy Kambati and Mercy Ndungu, were similarly elected unopposed.

The only position that drew competition is that of Assistant Secretary General, which attracted multiple candidates, setting it apart from an otherwise smooth and uncontested exercise.

Despite long queues and a high voter turnout, the election process remained calm and orderly, with heightened security ensuring stability throughout the exercise.

Speaking after his re-election on Friday, Oyuu expressed confidence in the union’s progress and pledged to further improve teachers’ welfare.

“We shall build on what we have achieved and take it a notch higher to ensure teachers in this country enjoy better terms and conditions of service,” he said.

He also called for unity within the union, urging those yet to be elected to work together for the benefit of members.

“I congratulate my colleagues who have been elected unopposed and encourage those contesting to join us in strengthening this union once the process is complete,” Oyuu added.

Official results from the Ministry of Labour are expected soon, after which Oyuu and his team will formally begin their 2026–2031 term at the helm of the teachers’ union.
